I got this email just yesterday regarding my lack of a “cyclist like physique”….

“You call yourself a ‘cycling expert’, yet you weigh more than 2 cyclists put together. I think your audience can see through the fact that you’re nothing more than a personal trainer that rides a bike.”

I’ll leave out this individuals name, as he left it out for me as well. By the way, I get emails like this about 3-5 times a week.

IS HE RIGHT? Well, yes and no.

YES, this is me filming TRICORE10 workouts and in final stages for my Half Ironman last year, at an all time adult low for my weight since my body building days, yet still about 170-172 pounds. Yah, I’m heavy and No–I’m not built like a cyclist or triathlete “should look like.”

FACT: I, like many of us, am not built “like a cyclist.” That is obvious. I have to work very hard to keep my weight from climbing and NO, I do not lift weights anymore. I have been off weights for the past 5 years, other than the use of Cyclo-CORE 2.0 and TRICORE10 for my Core and Functional Training to maintain CYCLING and TRIATHLON SPECIFIC STRENGTH.

FACT: No matter how much training I do, how many HIT workouts I perform, or how many changes in my diet I make–I will still never be “built like a cyclist.” At least in the way that many of us have been conditioned to BELIEVE a cyclist should look like.

FACT: I can not apologize for who I am or how my body is designed, just like you can’t. And the best we can do is make the most of what we are given and turn these mythical “WEAKNESSES” into our “GREATEST STRENGTHS!”

PERSONALLY: I got in the best shape of my life last year and hope to repeat that again and STILL I get comments from cyclists and triathletes saying “YOU’RE STILL NOT RIGHT!” If that’s how they feel about me, then I can’t imagine how other cyclists and triathletes that are trying to lose weight, make a comeback, or struggling to find time to get fit feel. Something’s NOT RIGHT! I am tired of feeling guilty about what I look like, because I don’t weigh 140 pounds, like some 24 year old PRO.

NOW…What Do YOU Think?

QUESTION #1: Do you think that cycling and triathlon place to much emphasis on weight, to the point of feeling GUILTY because of how we’re born?

QUESTION #2: Has that mentality impacted you personally either by your physique or with how you purchase your gear, bikes etc.? Meaning, is the idea of “weight” at the forefront of your daily thinking?

Thanks for Sharing Your Insights…

Rich Horacek, a newcomer to road racing and father of three has been paying attention and with the use of the CYCLO90 Day Training System, has cut his workout time in HALF and INCREASED his Uphill Climbing Power 21-56%!

Although he’s not a PRO, like the rider featured to the left–his IMPROVEMENT in power and fitness is impressive for ANY LEVEL CYCLIST.

“Graeme, Last year as I was trying to prepare for the upcoming season I would ride at least 2 hours on the trainer indoors due to weather and try to get in a couple 4+ hour rides on the weekend. This was extremely difficult to fit in with three kids and work. Compared to last years preparation of 14-16 hours on the bike per week thinking this is what I have to do to get better I am now doing Cyclo90 and spending less than half the time now using the HIT and CORE sessions. This has made me very happy and my family as well. I was never a skeptic but the reduced time made me wonder until I compared notes from a road race last year versus this year.

I just recently had a REAL WORLD VALIDATION…

I Used Strava to compare Cherry Pie Road Race. Same Race, similar conditions, one year later after roughly 4 months of CYCLO90!!! This is the uphill finish. Last year averaged 217 watts this year I averaged 270 watts for the entire race.

Final .9 miles

Rich Horacek Sat, Feb 19, 2011 14.4 mph 301 w – 3:28

Rich Horacek Sun, Feb 19, 2012 15.1 mph – 380 w – 3:19 (A 26% JUMP IN POWER!)

Final .3 miles

Rich Horacek Sat, Feb 19, 2011 11.7 mph 288 w – 1:41

Rich Horacek Sun, Feb 19, 2012 15.8 mph – 450 w – 1:15 (A 56% JUMP IN POWER!)

How Much Has Rich Improved Since He Started CYCLO90?

Here’s the email I got from Rich back in January, after 6 weeks of CYCLO90. I want you to NOTE that not only was his AVERAGE WATTAGE for his recent race significantly higher for the race as a whole (270 WATTS vs. 217), but he was still able to see a WHOPPING 56% JUMP in finishing power at the finish and passed 5 riders in his group and just behind the winner! His experience will improve and next time–I’d be betting on Rich. Significant for a newcomer (or anyone) in racing? I’ll let you do the math.

Hey Graeme,

“So I took my FTP around October after doing only a couple of your HIT 30 sessions and then I took the test yesterday in the 6th week of of Cyclo90. I am a relatively new cyclist with only 3 years under my belt but no formal training. In fact no racing at all until 2011. My old FTP test was done doing 20minutes all out and then 95% of that for the FTP and it was 256. Yesterday afternoon (not when I usually train, after a stressful workday) I maintained 304 during the entire test and pretty steadily, not much up and down. So that puts my FTP at 289! That’s crazy, I hope this keeps going. I am 6’1 and weigh 161 so I didn’t want to lose weight with the system just get stronger and it looks as though that is what is happening. Thanks for the training plan it is working great, I’m addicted to it. My first goal is tour of the Unknown Coast in Eureka CA, a top 20 finish. One question, when I am done with my Cyclo90 then what? I want to stay fit all year but understand there are ups and downs. Thanks for the help. Is this something where I should actually just go premium so I can get more consults with you?”–Rich Horacek

CYCLO90 Rider Testimonials…

“I was dreading the indoor training season until I decided to try CYCLO90. Graeme does a fantastic job of taking the SUCK out of indoor training and propelling toward your in-season goals! I’m just 4 weeks in and my numbers are higher than ever! Thanks Graeme!”–Chris McCormick

“I have a climb in my area that takes me about 9-10 minutes to climb, in my best fitness. Last year was my record at 9:03. It is only early February and I just climbed it today in 8:47!! If this is the level of progress I can expect from your CYCLO90 program, I’m all in for more! I have 4 weeks to go, and am more excited for my riding then ever. Thanks.”–Joseph Chapman

“Although I’ve been cycling off and on with a local bike club for the last 28 years, I only started racing at age 60 after retiring. I’ll be 62 in the spring and last year in the off season, your Cyclo-Plan 4P laid the foundation for a second place finish in the Provincial championship road race. The system works if you work it. I just love your Cyclo 90 HIT System.” Thanks so much. –Peter Brennan

“I’ve struggled to hang with my local group in the hills (all of them racers) for 4 years. After 4 weeks of the CYCLO90 program, every one of them are now asking me what I’ve been doing different in my training. I’ve never felt so good on the bike. Thank you!”–Jack Benneger

FACT: You will gain more cycling fitness from one moment in time that surpasses your current ability then ten moments in time that are “just below” your current ability.

Most of us already intellectually KNOW THIS, but FAIL to use this ELEGANTLY SIMPLE concept in reality.

Do you know why? My wife said it best last night…

“Choosing the same old thing, even if it’s not working and even if it leads to insanity is SEEMINGLY EASIER, then taking the leap of faith to make dramatic changes in the short term for long term benefits.”

One of the things that amazes me most about cyclists and triathletes is their failure to understand the value of “ONE BREAKTHROUGH POTENTIAL MOMENT IN TIME”. So many of us are so fixated on getting in our six workouts or our 5000 meter swims or our 150 miles this week that we FAIL to see the ACTUAL BENEFITS or lack there of in relation to our time and effort spent. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have time to waste.

The very first thing I do with a customer is help them REMOVE what no longer needs to be there. That can include junk miles, wasted workouts, excessive workouts, or worse–the “self belief” in one’s PERCEIVED LIMITERS.

I hear it all the time, “Graeme, I don’t just want to train and do workouts like a robot, I want to ENJOY my cycling as well. I want to improve, but what I’m doing now worked for me in years past and all my friends do it this way, so it must be right for me. I’m sure more focused workouts or attention to my weaknesses is good, but I don’t have TIME for change. I don’t want to lose what I’ve gained. I want to improve, but if that means cutting back on my miles or not riding 7 days a week, then I’m just not sure.”

My friend, “I’ve been riding a bike for 25+ years and helping tens of thousands of cyclists over the past decade overcome their perceived weaknesses–SO LET’S CUT THE BULL SHIT shall we?!”

If you want to ENJOY your cycling, your group rides, your running, etc MORE–then you and I both know that what you really mean is that you want to FEEL the EXHILARATION of “Achieving Something Breakthrough” more often.

Am I right? If not, then what the hell are you riding and running so much for?! No one else really cares about your hard training, but you. Am I right? I know I am and do you know why–I’m just like you. (at least I use to be.)

You don’t have me fooled my friend–I know you.

The PROBLEM is that many of us are either too afraid to FAIL or worse, too affraid to SUCCEED!

What I mean by that is that many of us are JUST BELOW our breakthroughs because we don’t want to “hurt”, right? It’s OK to admit it. I struggle with it too.

And in relation to that, many of us are JUST BELOW our breakthroughs because we’re worried if we DO BREAKTHROUGH, that it will be too much of a burden to HOLD ON TO IT.

Tell me I’m wrong.

If you want to achieve a TRUE BREAKTHROUGH, you have to do the following things…

You MUST be willing put yourself out there and be prepared to FAIL! It’s not an option, it’s mandatory.

You MUST be willing to try new things, even if it reveals what you’re currently doing is DEAD WRONG!

You MUST trust your body and understand that regardless of age, experience, or inherent ability–YOU CAN and WILL BREAKTHROUGH if you open your mind and let it come instead of STOPPING IT right before it happens.

Remember, one breakthrough moment in time is more powerful then ten moments in time that are just below your potential.

You’ve got great things ahead of you my friend. I will never stop working to remind you of that.

Ride Hard. Seek Out Failure. Get Over it and Breakthrough!

–Graeme Street

P.S. Here is another example of what can happen when you follow the above recommendations…

“Graeme, I’m one of those “skeptics” you speak of often in your podcast. I have been listening to you for over 2 years and would repeatedly dismiss your programs thinking that they couldn’t possibly help me more, than more time on my bike. This past year my work has become overwhelming and my time to ride has decreased dramatically. Hence, I finally pulled the trigger and got on your CYCLO90 program and now, after having used it for the past 6 weeks, I am kicking myself for not listening to you earlier. The workouts are focused and extra challenging and the simplicity of the in ride drills/plan works perfect for my needs. The humbling part for me has been the fact that I have made more progress in fitness in the past 6 weeks on your program then I have in the past 8 years riding. Thanks for your efforts and commitment. I am excited for more.”–Trent D Weiss

I would like to know what YOU THINK about the best way to use the kits as incentives or prizes for your use of the CYCLO90 Training System to achieve YOUR GOALS.

Please post below what YOU THINK…

Thanks.

Now, just like in cycling, many of us are on LIMITED TRAINING TIME and need FOCUSED PROGRAMS and WORKOUTS to get the most out of “tri”ing something new. Today, I’ll share with you how a 14 year Everyday Cyclist/Mountain Bike veteran has decided to throw his hand into the TRIATHLON ring, and do it in MINIMAL TRAINING time due to his life, travel, and work.

Should he be on my FAST and EFFECTIVE CYCLO90 Day H.I.T System OR my Comprehensive and Periodized TRI-PLAN 4P Annual System? GOOD QUESTION! Listen, and let’s go over the options and suggestions together…

SUGGESTIONS:

If you’re new to either cycling OR triathlon, I suggest a “get strong and fit FIRST” mentality for your most enjoyable experience. For this, I recommend the CYCLO90 Day Training System for quick and tangible results.

If you are an experienced cyclist, moving into triathlon for the FIRST TIME, I still suggest the CYCLO90 System to begin, then once you feel strong and fit (and you will), THEN I suggest the TRI-PLAN 4P System to begin to further segment and focus your training efforts on triathlon specifics and target distances.

If you are a more experience triathlete OR you are moving SERIOUSLY COMMITTED into triathlon from cycling, then I suggest moving directly into the TRI-PLAN 4P System, starting with Phase 1 “Base Strength and Technique”. Once complete you will be given guidance to move into specific BUILD PLANS (P2) for your weaknesses, and then into PEAK/TAPER Plans for Sprint, Olympic, 70.3, XTERRA, and/or IRONMAN distances and goals. All included in the system.

*NOTE: The TRI-PLAN 4P System is designed for beginner to advanced triathletes, with simple modulations in the base plans. It’s not that you have to be “advanced” to use it, but it is designed for the COMMITTED to ACHIEVE triathlete. If that’s not you yet–NO WORRIES.
Then it’s the CYCLO90 Day System for you and begin to slowly add in runs and swims on your own terms.

No need to make it any more complex then that my friend!

Continuing with my “Karate Kid” theme from CYCLO90 Lesson #1, “Sand Floor”, today’s 2 LESSONS are even more vital for any cyclist or triathlete who SINCERELY WANTS TO KICK ASS! (AKA make serious improvements).

Two things have to happen, and the first is CYCLO90 LESSON #2: “Getting Your Ass Kicked” by something that bubbles up a DECISION, a DRIVER, or a “WILLINGNESS TO CHANGE”, that which is no longer working.

That getting your ass kicked can happen differently for each of us. It could be getting dropped off the back of a group ride. It could be the inability to podium in a race. It could be bonking in a century or having to stop up a climb. It does not matter, an “ass kicking” is relative to the ONE, you!

Remember, Daniel was trying to learn Karate from a “book”. It was admirable, but for the situation, fighting trained individuals–it wasn’t cutting it. His EGO was keeping him from change initially, keeping him getting his ass kicked and scared.

A life lesson, that many of us, especially us cyclists and triathletes, who don’t like to ever admit we’re wrong, huhum… tend to do. If I’m speaking to YOU, please watch this 3 minute video and let me explain…

YES, just like Daniel getting his ass kicked by those bullies and finally driving enough EGO and PRIDE out of him to SURRENDER to someone’s passion of teaching others, so does it need to happen for YOU.

A BREAKTHROUGH must happen.

You can NOT improve your cycling from a “book” or “passed down dogmatic bull” from other riders.

Cycling is much more than that and I think you know it, yet many times–YOU DON’T CHANGE IT.

Whether we admit it or not, most cyclists I encounter have NEVER been taught these fundamentals and even though most of them are NOT improving with more miles and more wasted time–THEY KEEP DOING IT.

EGO and PRIDE can be a very detrimental thing to anyone who wants to improve.

Bluntly, if you ride and ride and let your pride and ego keep you from acknowledging it isn’t working anymore, THAT is why you get your ass kicked. (think about it.)

Until, the “light switch goes off.”

A SPARK! A change in IMMEDIATE PERCEPTION.

Look, and this is IMPORTANT…

I can NOT make you do my CYCLO90 program.

I can NOT convince you that patterning your training with SIMPLE FUNDAMENTALS is ALWAYS the answer, regardless of your goal, your age, your ability, your fitness, or your experience.

I can NOT give you that internal “flipping of the switch”.

That my friend, has to COME FROM WITHIN YOU.

Then you must DECIDE your intentions with LESSON #3: ”Do Cycling YES or Do Cycling NO?”

Remember, if you decide to do cycling “GUESS SO”, then expect “SO SO RESULTS” and to get SQUISHED, just like the grape.

YOU MUST DECIDE.

Then, and ONLY THEN can you be ready and “open for positive change and growth” to UNLIMITED CYCLING POTENTIAL!

Don’t be scared. It’s right there, you just have to surrender and let it come out.

If you think simply getting in tie or miles each week is “doing cycling yes”, then ask yourself ONE FUNDAMENTAL QUESTION:

“What am I getting out this, other than MORE MILES?”

Once you have the answers to both of the above lessons, I am here to help.

Ride Hard. Let Go of Your Ego. Do Cycling Yes!

–Graeme Street

P.S. If you have not yet submitted me your VIDEO for who you are, why you ride, what your obstacles are with CYCLO90 for the Challenge, you have until Tuesday, Jan 31st at midnight to post them here or on my FACEBOOK PAGE.
